5 things I learned about StumbleUpon

I’m unsure as to whether this post is worth it ;) but I decided to publish it. Hope you’ll like it. StumbleUpon is a kind of a social bookmarking network that lets users visit a website randomly based on their interests. Bloggers can use StumbleUpon to get hits to their articles in minutes. Over the past few months, I’ve been using StumbleUpon and here are 5 things I learnt about it:

  • Stumblers prefer brief and upto-the-point articles (not all, though)
  • Tag articles correctly while giving a thumbs up. An incorrectly tagged post may end up in not getting the attention it deserves
  • There are some hot tags which will give you instant traffic: Ubuntu, blogging, and many others. But your post has to be good enough to receive long-term traffic.
  • StumbleUpon users love hidden tricks, for example check out this post. And check how many people have given a thumbs up to it.
  • Even an old post gets instant popularity if it’s given a thumbs up by a powerful stumbler

That’s all I wanted to share with you. Take these points into consideration if you’re a blogger. Shoot your views in the comments.

  1. One thing I noticed while stumbling is that if you use more tag to your posts, then the url will have something like more# and if you stumble this post and another person stumbles the actual post, think its considered as 2 different. I’m not sure though. Tell me your experience on this.

  2. All we can do at this stage is speculate. In my opinnion, there’s no single cookbook to ensure your blog gets traffic, but a series of factors such as the topic, the hour in the day, who stumbles etc’.

  3. Great. The trick you posted is awesome. When asked few blogging experts, they said that StumbleUpon gets them traffic for a longer term.Great way.If used right, then you are going to get a huge traffic.Great post.

  4. Nicely observed. I have to agree with all of ‘em.

  5. Nirmal: I’m not sure about whether this is happening.
Ram, Benedict: I’m glad you found it useful. And Benedict, thanks for the stumble :)

  6. Great post. I would advice bloggers to use Stumble Upon tool bar for convenience.

  7. Beta3: I’m glad you liked it. BTW, all of us bloggers are hooked to StumbleUpon :D

  8. Can you tell me where i can get a hack for blogger for (digg it, stumble etc all in one after the post)?

  9. Ashfame: You can always get such buttons at http://www.addthis.com All instructions are available there. Check these> links too if you wish to hack the theme. Hope you’ll find them useful. :)

  10. I was told it is better to tag your post with general tags e.g., blog, blogging than specific tags e.g, computer memory, firefox.

However, I am sure what is the effectiveness of using general tags.

  11. Kuanhoong: Yeah, that’s right. I guess it’s because stumblers might have set their interests as computers, technology rather than computer memory or so. :)

  12. Shankar, you’re welcome!

  13. Hmm… I never seriously to learn about Stumbled upon. I’ll just create a post and stumbled it myself! ;p
I never looks deeper into it.
Any good reference article for knowing SU more? :)

  17. StumbleUpon is my favorite. You have a better chance of getting new readers from the StumbleUpon crowd compared to the others. Reddit is pretty good too.

  18. Wht other social bookmarking sites do you prefer?

  19. Brown Baron: You’re right. The traffic that SU sends is amazing. Thanks for stopping by! :)
Ashfame: Well, though I use Digg, SU and some more, my all time favourite is del.icio.us. I can’t imagine my day without accessing my bookmarks on del.icio.us ;) You can find my shared bookmarks here

  20. Yeah StubleUpon users are good for blogs unlike Digg users.

  21. Blogging with Desi Baba: You’re right Desi Baba.

  22. I’ve been surprised by spikes in traffic from StumbleUpon where people would suddenly start flooding to old but good articles that got picked up. Cool stuff.
