ADVERTISEMENTS

Increasing the number of RSS feed readers of your blog is an important part of building a larger reader base. More RSS readers means more chances of your content being noticed, read, more links, more comments, returning visitors and many more.

If you’re on WordPress, the following plugins may help in building RSS subscribers:

1. What would Seth Godin do

What would Seth Godin do plugin displays a reminder at the beginning of the first post asking readers to subscribe to your blog’s feed. It works based on session cookies, and normally displays the following message 3 times to new visitors:

Remind Visitors to subscribe

The message can be customized, and you can set it to be displayed for as many number of times as you wish.

Download the What would Seth Godin do Plugin to remind visitors to subscribe.

2. Subscribe Me

The Subscribe Me WordPress plugin lets you display chicklets on your blog, so that visitors can subscribe to the feed using their favourite RSS reader. You can customize the chicklets that get displayed using the Plugin’s options page.

RSS Chicklets

Download Subscribe Me Plugin to make it easy for readers to subscribe to your blog’s RSS feed.

3. Subscribe Remind

This WordPress plugin will place a reminder under each post, requesting your readers to subscribe.
Note that it’ll be displayed permanently, irrespective of new/returning visitors – because it is not based on cookies.

RSS Subscription reminder at the end of single posts

Download Subscribe Remind Plugin to increase RSS Subscribers

Try them, and they’ll work for sure. Do you know of any such plugins? What steps did you take as a blogger to raise the count of RSS readers? Tip us in the comments.

Good Post. I always wanted to know what plugins you guys use in WordPress to get those. Stumbled.

  • http://www.kuanhoong.com/ kuanhoong

I am using almost all the listed plugins :)
    Stumbled!

Thanks for the stumble, guys. Much appreciated.

Stumbled too, Shankar! Nice Post! You remained me about the lessons I learn from several blog guru! :D

I was looking for the 1st plugin.. Just didn’t know the name..

  • http://www.sizlopedia.com Dj Flush

Nice :D Post there Shankar :P and see how cool my blog looks in the second plugin lol hehe

  • http://ashwinr.com/ Ashwin

I imagine myself as a visitor and hence apply the things to my blog. I normally see a some posts and if I like them, I’ll subscribe to the blog.

Honestly speaking I feel all this is spammy. Just my personal opinion.

  • http://www.shankarganesh.com/ Shankar Ganesh

    @Ken: Thanks :D
@Dj: Yep, it does look cool on your blog.
@Ashwin: May be they are a bit spammy to you. But I don’t think so. Just reminding with plain text won’t harm I believe.

  • http://www.benh.org/blog Benedict Herold

    Agreed on #1 and #2

#3 seems to redundant to me.

  • http://www.nirmaltv.com Nirmal

Nice post. I’m not using the subscribe me plugin.

  • http://www.pallab.net Pallab

I have manually edited the single.php file to add a big (almost bloated) rss subscription box.

I am not a big fan of the multiple chicklets in the sidebar though. I find it a bit cluttering. I prefer a single button for all kind of solution (eg. addthis.com)

  • http://www.nirmaltv.com Nirmal

Oh…I didnt see that first image when i commented. :D

Good Tips and I can assure that these methods really work as I have been using these methods and my subscriber count is really booming…

  • http://www.rishiraj.info/ Rishi

Wow all plugins are really cool. Installed them all but found a decrease in feed reader count today :( instead of a increase :P

  • http://techyantra.net Beta3

Stumbled :) . Nice one. I use all and I don’t like the name of the first plugin :P

  • http://www.shankarganesh.com/ Shankar Ganesh

@Benedict: I too thought the same, but wanted to mention it nevertheless.
    @Nirmal: No problem.
@Pallab: AddThis is a really nice widget to put on your blog.
@Mr. Byte: Thanks for telling us your experience.
@Rishi: Never, never trust FeedBurner stats that much. They aren’t accurate.
@Beta3: Thanks for the stumble. I too ponder why the plugin has been named so :D

  • http://www.myokyawhtun.com Myo Kyaw Htun

If your content is not good, no one want to subscribe your feed even you installed these plugins in your site. Am I right ?

    Just thoughts ;)

Anyway, I stumble for you and appreciate your works.

  • http://www.singlegrain.com/ San Diego SEO

Good post. The Seth Godin plugin is pretty bugy for me. Also I stumbled it

  • http://germworks.net Jermayn Parker

I thought one and three are fairly similar as “WWSG” has abilities to display at the bottom of the posts as well.

  • http://www.techzilo.com Techzilo

All three of them together is too much. I prefer only #3, as the reader will be impressed by the post that he will subscribe, or forget if he thinks it isnt worthwile.

  • http://www.shankarganesh.com/ Shankar Ganesh

@Myo: That’s right, nobody would subscribe for useless content :D And, thanks for the stumble.
    @San Diego SEO: Thanks :)
@Jermayn Parker: That’s right, no big difference.
@Techzilo: I use only two of them :D

  • http://www.rishiraj.info/ Rishi

@Shankar: Then how to check the feed stats? :P

  • http://www.webmaster-dome.com/ Sreejith

Hey, really liked the article. I’m going to implement these right now. Thanx, d00d :)

  • http://www.online-tech-tips.com Aseem Kishore

I’ve been trying to find one RSS plugin that creates an entire little region in a differnent color instead of just simply a one line piece of text, but I can’t find it anywhere! Anyone know what I am talking about???

  • http://www.siteguide.us Vijay

And I totally concur with Ashwin. I too look at my site from a visitor’s point of view before implementing anything for my blog. That is primarily why my blog is not monetized by any CPC networks for now.

But I use my own customized way to ask people to subscribe .

  • http://www.shankarganesh.com/ Shankar Ganesh

@Aseem: Using the “What would Seth Godin do” plugin, you could alter the options to display text in color (HTML coding required.. bit easy)
@Vijay: Thanks for expressing your views. Hope to see you around.

  • http://www.tipsofallsorts.com Clara

I’m now compelled to use these plugins after reading this post. Thanks!

  • http://www.shankarganesh.com/ Shankar Ganesh

    @Clara: Welcome.

  • http://contents-magic.com/tag/wordpress WordPress Guru Advice

The first one is a gem. I am using that, but since I am making more then one change at a time , I cant really measure the total effects by this plugin.

The second one is not the best I would say, however it seems popular. The problem that I see with the Subscribe Me is the screen real state that takes. That is too precious for a lot of people who have filled every little pixel of their blog with something.

Subscribe Remind and WWSGD are kind of alternatives to each other.

  • http://www.meditationiseasy.com/blog/ Eklavya

Thanks Shankar for this wonderful post. I was looking for these plugins and I stumbled upon your site through Google. By the way I am also this theme for my blog. Can you please tell me is the ‘Subscribe via email’ option on the top right sidebar of your theme is also a plugin or otherwise. Thanks.

  • http://analogstuff.blogspot.com analogstuff

    Great post Ganesh,

I am learning so many things by reading articles from your blog.
I have recently implemented Feedburner chicklet in my blog and see around 70 subscribers now.

    Thanks for the Great Post.

  • http://www.shankarganesh.com/ Shankar Ganesh

@WordPress Guru Advice: Thanks for dropping by.
@Eklavya: You’re most welcome. The ‘Subscribe via eMail’ thing is a service offered by FeedBurner. You can get the code for it from your FeedBurner Dashboard.
@AnalogStuff: You’re welcome as well. I’m glad you liked it.

  • http://www.bustachange.com Jerad Kaliher

Good information, I’ve previously seen the Seth Godin plugin but after your recommendation I think I am finally going to give it a try.

  • http://www.donnabarstow.com Donna

Most considerate of you to list these all together for us.
I think the first one is a little pushy.
Where did you get Santa on the RSS button?!

  • http://jalaj.net/ Jalaj

I have just started providing RSS links… so just 16-20 readers now !

  • http://www.madmouse.com/blog/ Squeaky

I went with subscribe remind. Had an issue with my Feedburner feed, had to replace line 16 with my Feedburner URL. Works great now……….

  • http://www.busysphere.com Enbee

Great post. I tried all these plugins earlier. These are little bit okay, but content is the king. Good content will attract readers irrespective of all these. I think my comment is too late as per the date of the post.
