BananaScreen: Your face is your password

Folks at BananaSecurity have created a program by the name BananaScreen that makes your face your password.

Face Recognition & Authentication software

All that you need is the BananaScreen software, a webcam and some space in your hard disk. Your facial details are analysed and are stored in binary format - no other application will be able to access that data.

Spyware free, the best part of this program is that you need not pay even a single penny to use it. It works with most web cameras, the site says. Incompatibility issues can be reported.

BananaScreen makes your computer inaccessible when you step away, and then unlocks it when you return.

I haven’t yet tried it, but Anand says:

“I myself tried the program which sits lite in the system and unlocks quickly after showing my face but the cons is it doesn’t allow multi-user support as far now.”

A cool way to put your webcam into good use. Currently the software runs on Windows 2000 SP4 and XP SP2, and a Mac OS X version will be out soon.

FaceCode
was another software that was released earlier this year. It does the same job, but comes with a price tag.

  1. Shankar, never knew of softwares like that. Cool. I want to give it a try. But the thing is that my webcam is not clear. I’ll have to get a webcam first. Thanks for the cool software.

  2. Interesting software its similar to the Lenevo’s face recognition software

  3. Seems a cool software. Just like that of Lenevo’s new face recog. notebooks :) . Will be trying it when will get myself with a webcam.

Will it work with digicam / cellphone connected to PC working as webcam?

  4. Haha! It works…very well in fact…had no problems locking and unlocking even with a 5 year old webcam and a face like mine! =|

Hopefully updates to the software will allow more than one model.

  5. Nice find Shankar. :D

  6. WoW thats soo cool i think i will check it out right now may be blog abt it too

  7. Nice find . This software serves well in terms of security. Do they have any kind of backup if the application fails?

  8. I wanted to try this.. but seems there is no support for VISTA yet :(

  9. The review of the software is great Shankar but as many people are saying that it is good in terms of safety I would like to oppose that.

Perhaps the software can be one of the biggest security loop holes if you ask me.

Have you ever though if I get my picture printed on a leather or glaze paper and put in infront of the web cam the software cant dare say its not me?? I hope you understand my point

Unless if there is any detector within the software?

  10. Nice…..more and more face recog. stuff are coming…

Guess we should call Saif once more for a test as in Lenovo… ;)

Btw, changing to Pearson’s theme is cool, but middle content 3 col theme is a bad idea - I suffered ceaselessly when I had a middle content 3 col theme……..

  11. @DJ: I would agree with you on that but if we think from a common person point of view this will be enough for a while. This can not be practically implemented in big companies or lawsuits.

On the contrary ,The security is never single layer. You should have biometircs + default password + could be more depending on the need.

In my previous comment I was wondering If it has some failsafe feature. I guess its not.

  12. @Rishi: I don’t think it’ll work with digicams.
@SlickMeister: Glad that it works for you, thanks for sharing your experience with the software.

  13. Seems pretty interesting to try out. First, its time to get a webcam before I try working this!

  14. Software seems interesting, already a big discussion here. BTW again a theme change? * phew *

  15. Sounds like a great and nifty software . I should try it some day , but I guess I’m old-fashion . I prefer to protect my stuff with a simple password that I don’t write anywhere , just in my mind .

And as far as face recognition goes , you’ll have to ask yourselves the question if the software is capable enough to do a perfect face scan and analysis , because you might end up with either a wacky software that gives you only headaches either with a software that doesn’t work properly .

    Regards ,
