If you’re a beginner learning the English language, you’re probably making a good use of your desktop references like dictionaries and thesauri. If you’re the kind of a person who spends much time in front of your PC, you may find it lazy to flip through hundreds of pages to look up a word in your dictionary, just like me

So, I’ve compiled here the most popular, useful and free dictionary tools for your Windows machine:
WordWeb Dictionary Software
WordWeb is an amazingly slick dictionary software for your Windows computer. WordWeb Dictionary software sits on the system tray and you can look up definitions for words on WordWeb from any other program like MS Word easily.
WordWeb can fetch definitions, synonyms, related words (thesaurus like), also point to the root words. WordWeb dictionary tool also includes the pronunciation key for words.

It can also fetch meanings and synonyms from online dictionaries and reference websites like Wikipedia and Wikitionary. It can fetch meanings for Indian, American, British, Australian, Canadian and global English words.
Merriam Webster’s Concise Dictionary Software
This free dictionary software brings the content of the reputed Merriam Webster Dictionary to your computer.
Merriam Dictionary Software brings to your computer clear definitions, a pronunciation key and more that you may need.
You can look up any word in the dictionary by double clicking on it from your documents. This tool can also be used as a spell checker for your text documents.

A good collection Shankar. Really these tools will be very helpful for students like me who don’t want to get bored in flipping through 100’s of papers in a Dictionary
Glad you found that useful, Logesh
Nice collection, I’ve never know these before. Thanks, Shankar.
Magical Jellybean Dictionary looks cool. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome, guys
Another great post shanker. I used to have POD’s (Pocket Oxford Disctionary) desktop application. But now since I am on web most of the time. I use google.
.. Just give define:word in google search box ..and you will get the definition. But for offline usage , these tools are the best option
@Kanak: Thanks, my favourite too is Google’s define operator
Offline tools - I prefer WordWeb.
Great collection, i never that these existed.
Cool collection buddy , i have used Oxford till now .
I too stick with Define simply to avoid installing software, but I am having an increasing need to check the dictionary even when offline, so I really need to use one of these
@Madhur: Oxford is good, but is the software free of cost?
Thanks for dropping by.
@Vijay: Glad
Nice tool, but i think it will not find place on those peoples PC who uses google define operator.
Nice! Stumbled.
I use Microsoft Encarta. There is a dictionary inside and it’s quite useful. I will try this software. Hope I can help me improve my English.
Nice tool, but i think it will not find place on those peoples PC who uses google define operator.

I am using wordweb from the past 1 year its a great dictionary.

I always use MDict on my PDA,and it also has a Windows version. One of my favorite features is that I can add all kinds of dictionaries to MDict as many as I can.The .MDX files is available on many websites for free.
Shankar, your list looks pretty good and useful. I normally don’t use any of these softwares. Maybe I can give it a try. But yes, these will be very useful and is also a must for beginners of English Language.
Ah, it seems that you’ll make me download one of these
Well, I’m planning to buy a dictionary myself…and the whole sole reason for that is that Oxford dictionary comes with a CD and that has whole dictionary in it
@Ashok: You were right about that define operator.
@Shashank: It *IS* a great dictionary. I’ve been using it for a year or so too.
@Ken Xu: Thanks for the stumble.
@摩摩诘: You’re welcome. Thanks for telling about the tools that you use.
@RamKarthik: Give ‘em a try
@TipsoSaurus: LOL I have an Oxford hard copy but it didn’t come with a CD.
This is going to make things a lot easier for me. Great find. Thanks buddy.
It would be very useful for me, thanks.
I use Oxford’s online dictionary.

And it’s the best if you have internet. And coming to Wordweb, I feel it sucks. The definitions aren’t articulated well.

I used to have a Oxford Dictionary application that I used frequently. I am not sure if it was from the publishers (though it looked like genuine) but was a very fast one. Now that I cannot trace it, I will try the applications you have mentioned.
Good wordWeb

I dont have an off line free dictionary English to English pc version. Here in Iraq it is hard to find one which would work. If you can send me a url address or http address it will be perfect.
it’s my pleasure to learn somethingh from your software it is very helpful for increase my english language thanku very much
Thank you for this!! But I’d just like to know if these software require an internet connection to use after downloading it, because I don’t always have access to the net..
^^
These software don’t require an internet connection to work.
thank you!
Is there any link for downloading a free dictionary?
WordWeb’s license is ludicrously strict though. I can only use 3 times a year after the 30-day trial? Preposterous.
