First Impressions on Yahoo’s new social network – Mash

Yahoo! is rolling out a new social network, Mash. It’s invite based, and is refreshing. Completely AJAXified, the network has more or less all the features that you’d would love to have in a social network. Thanks to Sankar Anand, I got an invite and signed up.

Yahoo! Mash, just like any other social network, gives you a profile page that not only you can customize, but also your friends. Your buddies can add stuff (modules) to your profile page and spice ‘em up.

Upon logging in, you’ll see a similar landing page like you might’ve seen on Facebook. It lists updates from your friends, their activities and so on.

 

Like you have on MySpace, Yahoo! Mash offers profile page customization features. At the moment, you’re allowed to change the background, module colours, border, link and font colours. You can also edit the profile page CSS.

Modules are little applications that can be added to your profile page (something similar to applications on Facebook). Currently, there are a few modules available, like for example, RSS feeds, etc.

The module gallery lists all the modules that can be added to your page, categorically. Modules can be added by your friends to your page. By default, there are two modules added to your page: the Mash Pet with which you can play around, and the Blurt module that you can use to announce something to your friends. Expect to see loads of fun modules in the near future, as they open up the network to third party developers.

Every profile page has a guest book (which reminds me of scrapbooks on Orkut) wherein people can post messages that can be viewed by the public. You can permit only your friends to post on your guest book, by changing the settings.

Tagging – one of the most important features that relate to social networking is there on Mash. You can add tags to describe yourself or your friends.

Yahoo! Mash also allows you to block people. Plus, Yahoo! Mash offers simple profile URLs that your buddies can use to find you. For example, my profile can be accessed via this simple URL: http://mash.yahoo.com/shankar_ganesh74

Overall, Yahoo! Mash seems a promising social network.

There’s no clarity on the number of invitations that can be sent, so I’ll be sending invites till the system permits to. Just drop a word here in the comments.

  98. When I go there, I am asked to sign in if I’m already mashing. But when I click on the “sign in” link, yahoo said I’m already signed out of the yahoo network. I keep trying again and again, still the same result.
