Get the most out of your screen space

Does your desktop resemble the one above? May be you’re running too many applications, all crammed up for space on your 15″ or 17″ monitor, and they’re desperate for more space on your screen. You can’t afford a new monitor this time around or setting a high resolution doesn’t go well with your monitor.
Here’s a practical guide on how you can get rid of all the tempting distractions and put more focus on the most needed jobs by making the best use of the available screen space.
Split large files using GSplit
If you urgently have to send a large file to your friend, in disks, but couldn’t because the file is too big to fit in one disk? How about splitting the file into pieces and then re uniting them back in the recipient’s computer? GSplit is the way to go.

GSplit can split files into multiple pieces, which you can carry in disks. Later when you want to reunite them, just launch the executable file that comes with the pieces – they get merged into one single file. The main advantage is that the recipient does not require the GSplit program to merge the splitted pieces.
Get productive with your instant messenger
Most people spend a lot of time chatting on the web, and IMs have been a productivity killer to many of us. But did you know that you can make your IM client a bit more useful by adding a few useful bot programs to your buddy list?
Here are three that can help you to do some useful tasks from your Instant Messenger.
Pidgin: Notifications when a buddy comes online
Pidgin is now becoming the popular choice for a multi-protocol messenger where in you can connect to different networks that include Google Talk, Yahoo, etc.
Pidgin, by default, does not notify you when a buddy comes online. But you can activate that feature. It’s known as Buddy Pounce on Pidgin. Here’s how:
7 Password Don’ts
Okay it’s a cliche
but let me tell you again
. Here are my tips:
- Don’t use phone numbers, birthdays, names of your friends, relatives as a password.
- Don’t use dictionary words for a password – this is very important.
- Don’t just use alphabets. Always mix up numbers and symbols, uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Don’t use the same password for all your online accounts.
- Don’t have the same passwords for a long period of time. Make sure you change them in a regular time interval.
- Don’t write down your password.
- Don’t reveal your password to your friends and family.

Backup your Gmail messages
Well, this evening, I just logged in to my Gmail account, only to find something happening wrong. It was actually a temporary error, Google told me, and I was lucky enough to get back into my Gmail account within minutes. But what if my archived messages were gone? Some important ones! What if….
The worst thing might happen at anytime. Nothing is cent percent perfect. So why not take up some precautions?
Well, I earlier set up my Gmail account such that it forwards all emails to a private Google group and I established it, thanks to this tutorial on Google Tutor. When this is done, there’s a copy of all your arrived emails in a private Google group, accessible only to you. So when something’s wrong, you can access your emails – safe and sound – on Google Groups.
